"It's Alright With Me"

This recording of "It's Alright With Me" comes from my private archives. Frank and I had been overdubbing his horn on my own arrangements, but one day in the late 70s, he brought in some charts that had been arranged by trombone great JJ Johnson. We decided to give it a go, with him playing 6 trombones and me playing drums, bass and piano. This version of "It's Alright With Me" is one of the resulting tracks!

To say that the multitracking equipment was primitive is a huge understatement: it was a Tapesonic two-track, powered by steam I think. I played the drums onto one track, then while copying it to the second track, I added the bass, then the piano part. Back and forth we'd go, losing fidelity with each bounce! By the time Frank added his last trombone part, it sounded just like what you're listening to right now.

One of my proudest moments was when Frank gave an interview to a national trombone publication. He was describing his current musical output, and he said "There's this guy named Doug Robinson who plays about a zillion instruments. Together we plan on overdubbing the world!"
