SPINNER by Michelle Abby

Produced and arranged by Doug Robinson (Jazzooo)

Michelle and I had been friends for almost two decades, but I never fully appreciated the depth of her talent until she asked me to produce her debut CD. I suggested that we work on a couple of tunes to check out the chemistry, but we never really looked back. She continued to bring her wonderful songs to me, and she took my wild-eyed production approaches in stride. Throughout it all, her amazing voice held everything together.

Recorded completely on the Roland VS880, SPINNER is the result of almost two years worth of fun and hard work. I would like to publicly thank Michelle for letting me shape her sound for this CD, but at some points it was more like allowing me to hang on for dear life.

This music still feels new in nature to me. It’s folk, rock, jazz, pop, and world music all blended together, not as a marketing ploy but because it arrived at our musical doorstep that way. (Come to think of it, that’s probably a lousy marketing ploy to begin with).

As producer, arranger and performer on SPINNER, I got to indulge in some outrageous overexposure: piano, guitars, drums, bass, dobro: you name it, and I probably played it somewhere on Spinner. Kudos though to Michelle who also played rhythm guitar, Mike Shea who played bass on some tracks including his gorgeous album closer "DogWoman," my wife Glenda for her background vocals and to Ruthie Herring who laid down the playful violin solo for the track "I Have."

Check out the Real Audio samples of a couple of my favorites, grab yourself an MP3 of the knockout song “Mean Something,” then head over to On-Line Store and pick up a copy. Michelle is truly an artist deserving wider recognition.
